GENESEO, N.Y. (WHEC) — University of Rochester Medicine’s Noyes Health Urgent Care Center in Geneseo announced Tuesday evening that it will close temporarily until Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022, due to staffing challenges.

In a statement, Noyes Health President and CEO Dr. Chad Teeters said, “We are navigating through unprecedented times in the middle of a pandemic. Our healthcare workers are doing their best. We appreciate the understanding of the community and will reopen Urgent Care as soon as possible.”

Teeters explained to News10NBC that the current wave of omicron cases is exacerbating an already strenuous staffing situation.

"We did have one nurse practitioner who was out on extended disability leave, which further compromised our staff,” Teeters said. “And then, unfortunately, we did have another nurse practitioner who went out with COVID exposure."

As of Wednesday morning, 10 Noyes Health Urgent Care staff members were out on quarantine or for COVID exposure. On top of that, Teeters says some of his employees have left to pursue other career opportunities.

"So with all that kind of coalescing at once, and you know with the normal staff illnesses and whatnot that come up, we didn’t have enough staff to cover the urgent care,” Teeters said.

This situation is not unique to Noyes Health Urgent Care in Geneseo. In fact, News10NBC has covered widespread staffing issues at local healthcare facilities extensively for months. However, unlike other local healthcare facilities that are having major challenges filling open positions or retaining employees, Teeters says that the state vaccination mandate for healthcare workers is not part of the problem at Noyes Health Urgent Care in Geneseo, as all employees there are vaccinated.

"It’s not an issue of unvaccinated staff,” said Teeters. “It’s just an issue of when they’re COVID-positive, we have to put them out for at least the five days now or sometimes longer if they have any symptoms."
