ONTARIO COUNTY, N.Y. (WHEC)— Ontario County will introduce former sheriff Philip Povero as the county’s interim sheriff Monday afternoon.

According to the county, Povero, who served 18 years as sheriff before retiring in 2018, will hold the interim position until at least Dec.31, 2022.

Povero replaces Kevin Henderson, who resigned amid accusations of making comments of a sexual nature in front of staff, and not disciplining command staff when inappropriate comments were made. Henderson was not the only one to step down. The former undersheriff resigned, as did the newly appointed, and sworn-in undersheriff.

Chief John Falbo was filling in following Henderson’s resignation but then late last week our news partner, The Daily Messenger reported Povero would be on board to serve in the temporary role.

A formal swearing-in ceremony will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Canandaigua.
