Ontario County Humane Society Monday closes on land for new adoption center
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Ontario County Humane Society Monday closed on a lot that it’s planning to develop into a new adoption center.
The 92-acre plot of land is on Route 332 and Yerkes Road in Canandaigua. The humane society said it paid for the property using an endowment fund for future planning that it raised through donations over the years.
The shelter will be working with the Town of Canandaigua, the Department of Environmental Conservation, Cornell University and local architects to create plans.
Hiking trails and bridges are also a goal in the years ahead.
The non-profit will be launching a fundraising campaign to move forward with the project.
Once the project is complete and the new shelter is operating, the Happy Tails Animal Shelter 2976 County Road 48 in Canandaigua will be repurposed into an intake shelter only; that way animals can be kept at the intake center until staff feel they’re ready to be adopted.
