Police: Man arrested after shaking baby to the point of hemorrhaging

GENEVA, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Geneva man is facing charges after police say he shook a baby to the point that it caused a serious brain injury.

It happened on Nov. 6, 2021, at around 11:15 a.m. on Wadsworth Street.

Police responded to a call that a baby was having trouble breathing. When they arrived, they found a three-month-old who was unconscious, gasping and breathing irregularly.

The baby was taken to Geneva General Hospital and stabilized before being transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight.

Police say the child is still being treated there.

Police say the baby suffered subdural and retinal hemorrhaging.

On Thursday, police arrested Brent S. Paylor, 30, and charged him with felony reckless assault of a child, as well as endangering the welfare of a child, because it happened while a 2-year-old was present.

Paylor is being held for arraignment, police say.
