Police release name of man killed on Lyell Avenue

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester police said that Derek Taylor, 36, is the man who was fatally shot on Lyell Avenue early Sunday morning.
Taylor is Rochester’s 44th homicide victim of 2022, surpassing a record for the number of homicides in July. At this time last year, the city had 42 homicides.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies, New York State Troopers, and the Rochester Police Department responded to Lyell Avenue, between Whitney Street and Orchard Street, for a report of a man shot around 1:40 a.m. They found Taylor and he was rushed to Strong Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators from RPD’s Major Crimes Unit said that the shooting may have been caused by an altercation outside a bar involving several women, which escalated into violence. However, there are no suspects in custody yet. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
