Red Alert today, but pleasant weather ahead this week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The First Alert Weather Team has issued a Red Alert for Saturday with strong wind gusts near 70mph possible later this afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service will allow a High Wind Warning to go into effect this afternoon and last until late tonight with gusts generally near 60mph and the threat for power outages across the region. Winds will remain breezy this morning and early this afternoon before a cold front approaches form the west and moves through the region around 3 this afternoon.

Behind this cold front is when gusts ramp up. Gusts behind this front will quickly approach 60mph and remain there for a few hours, threatening the region with scattered power outages. The power outage threat will continue into tonight before winds slowly ease after midnight.

Today will also feature a few isolated showers and a few rumbles of thunder possible when a line of showers passes with this cold front later today, but we may also see sunshine early this afternoon ahead of the advancing cold front. Temperatures will also be mild with highs in the mid and low 60s before tumbling behind the cold front back into the 30s. Our record high for today is 62 set back in 2015 and that is in jeopardy of being broken as we are expecting a high temperature of 64 early this afternoon.

For more information in regards to today’s "Red Alert" visit the "Red Alert Update" article on our website. After this storm passes, pleasant and mild weather is expected for next week.

We will be on the breezy and cooler side for Sunday, but plenty of sunshine is expected making for a much better half to the weekend. Winds will be gusting near 30mph early before they settle down Sunday afternoon, and temperatures will be cooler but still mild with highs in the low 40s. The mild weather continues for the work week with highs in the mid and upper 40s for Monday and Tuesday before rising back into the upper 50s to near 60 by Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday will come with a shower or two and increase cloud cover, but nothing significant is expected at this time. We will watch Thursday for winds to pick up, but nothing like what’s expected this afternoon looks to be on the way but stay tuned for that.

Overall, pleasant weather is on the way for most of this week, but things may revert back to winter next weekend with cooler weather expected. Stick with the First Alert weather Team throughout today and this week for updates on significant weather across Rochester.
