ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Two children were sent to the hospital after a fire broke out at a home early Sunday morning.

The Rochester Fire Department responded around 2:50 a.m. for a report of a house on fire on Jefferson Terrace.

Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy smoke and flame coming from the second floor of a two-story home.

Fire crews quickly entered the home where they encountered high heat and low visibility on the second floor. It took approximately 30 minutes to get the fire under control.

Two adults and four children were able to make it out of the house before crews arrived.

The fire caused extensive damage to the second floor and the house is considered unlivable.

Firefighters say occupants told them that one of the children had been playing with a lighter and started the fire.

Two children suffered minor burns and were taken to a local hospital.

The Red Cross is currently assisting the two adults and four children with temporary housing.
