Rochester man sentenced to 21 months in prison for having stolen gun

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A Rochester man caught with a stolen handgun more than a year ago is headed to prison.

William Coles, 41, faces 21 months for possessing a gun as a felon.

In December of 2020, state police tried to pull Coles over at the intersection of Borchard and Remington streets, but he drove away. Police say about a block over, he got out of the car and ran.

That’s when police noticed the .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol he tried to toss before he was caught.

Prosecutors say it was stolen in Florida, and Coles was convicted of criminal possession of a controlled substance back in 2004, so he is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
