State Comptroller reminding NYers to use gift cards before they expire

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — In 2021, $16 million in unused gift cards was turned over to the New York State Comptroller’s Office.

That’s why Thomas P. DiNapoli is asking New Yorkers to spend the gift cards they received this holiday season before they expire.

In New York, after five years, money from unused gift cards is turned over to the Office of Unclaimed Funds as abandoned property.

DiNapoli is also encouraging New Yorkers to read the fine print on their gift cards because many have inactivity fees that decrease their value.
