State data: This season’s flu cases surpass all flu cases from 2020-21 flu season
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State Department of Health statistics confirm that the number of lab-confirmed cases of the flu has already surpassed the total from all of the 2020-21 and this week’s cases are higher than the number of cases during the same time in the 2019-20 and 2018-19 flu seasons.
While experts say lockdowns and pandemic measures were likely responsible for the low flu numbers last flu season, the same can’t be said for the 2019-20 and 2018-19 seasons.
The state’s data shows that during the week ending on Dec. 4, there were about 3,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu in New York. At the same time during the 2019-20 season, there were about 1,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu and during the 2018-19 season, it was only around 100.
The number of lab confirmed cases of influenza in NYS so far this season has already surpassed the total from the 2020-21 season. https://t.co/t54n3YQRFr pic.twitter.com/J6tM3RJdfN
