ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – Have you noticed that we really have not heard much about tropical weather so far this season? It is still a little early in the season, but things should be starting to ramp up as we go through the next several weeks.
If you look at the list of names for the tropical season for 2022, we only had three named storms. They are Alex, Bonnie and Colin. And you may also wonder why you have not heard much about any of these storms in the past. The answer is they did not have much of an impact on the mainland of the United States. It is interesting to compare the number of storms that we had last season, at least through the month of August. It was a little busier as we had nine named storms. So what is going on?
There has been an inhibiting factor and that has been the dust coming off the coast of Africa. That dust has a tendency to diminish any development of tropical systems coming off Africa. However, we think this is going to change in the coming days and weeks. Right now there is a 40% chance, or less, that there will be development in the Atlantic – especially near the Cape Verde Islands. And if that storm were to develop, that storm would be named Danielle.
Next, we will find out if that storm will make it all the way across the Atlantic Ocean.
