IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WHEC) — A West Irondequoit School District librarian is leaving the comforts of the classroom, and going into the Alaskan bush country.

Next month Julianne Westrich will join two other finalists chosen for the "Teacher on the Trail" competition.

It’s part of the yearly Iditarod Trail sled dog race.

She’s been following the 1,000-mile race for years.

Back in 2020, she found an application on the Iditarod website and applied.

She said the students are beyond thrilled.

"If I had a choice there would be probably about 750 of them packed in my suitcase, cause the amount of students that said ‘Can I come, can I come, can I come?’ has been overwhelming," Westrich said.

One winner will be chosen for the "Teacher on the Trail."
