ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – According to the World Health Organization, Monkeypox is getting a new name.

They say it will rename the virus after concern over racism and stigma.

The virus, which first originated in Africa, has now infected more than 1,600 people globally in more than two dozen countries.

Last week, a group of scientists voiced concerns the name could be stigmatizing.

The WHOs Director-General says the agency will make announcements about the new name as soon as possible.
