STARKEY, N.Y. (WHEC) — A man is dead after the Yates County Sheriff’s Office said they were hit by a train in the Town of Starkey on Wednesday.

Deputies say the train was headed southbound from Norfolk Southern. The crash happened at around 1:30 p.m. near Shannon Corners Road.

On Thursday, deputies said Raymond Arthurs was walking down the tracks when the train was coming, and despite several horns, Arthurs never moved.

During their investigation, deputies found Arthurs has a significant hearing impairment.

Witnesses told deputies that Arthurs would often trespass on the railroad’s property.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad is still conducting an internal investigation but has determined that speed was not a factor.
