Good Question: Where’s my rebate check from the state?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) – I’ve heard from several of you saying– where’s my money?
It’s coming from the state as part of a tax rebate approved just for this year. Some people have received it already but what about everyone else?
The homeowner tax rebate credit is a one-time payment offering some relief to those eligible. About 2.5 million people are covered.
All those who:
- Qualified for a 2022 STAR credit or exemption.
- Had income that was less than or equal to $250,000 for the 2020 income tax year.
- A school tax liability for the 2022-2023 school year that is more than your 2022 STAR benefit.
Not everyone is getting the same amount. That varies based on where you live and income. Some 2 million checks have already been sent out going back to June.
As for the other 500,000 the NYS Department for Tax and Finance says be patient. “We need school tax data that is not available until school tax bills are issued,” the department’s website states.
That could be another month or a little longer. The department also says “You can expect to receive it before your school tax bill is due. Our call center cannot provide you with a specific timeframe.”
These payments are on top of the usual STAR tax relief payments that go out each year but it’s easy to confuse the two. Here’s another thing, by law the state can’t send out a homeowner tax rebate check for anything less than $100. If the amount of the credit was less than that, you will not receive a check.
