Firefighters: Apartment wall caves in after water main break

BROCKPORT, N.Y. — People living at the Winston Woods in Brockport were in their apartment as water came rushing in after a water main break.

Officials with the Brockport Fire District tell News10NBC they initially responded after someone called and said their basement wall caved in, and water started rushing into their apartment.

Fire crews say part of the water flow was from a water main break on Thursday that they believe was repaired.

“We don’t know if there was a second break, or if the first break wasn’t properly repaired,” said Christopher Martin with the Brockport Fire District. “We have no way of knowing that at this time.”

Jared Clyde lives in the apartment where the basement wall collapsed. He tells News10 NBC he and his girlfriend were eating lunch when it happened.

“Me and my girlfriend looked at each other and immediately got out as quick as we could. As soon as we touched the top step, all we heard was just the wall break through,” Clyde said.

Once first responders got there, they were able to shut off the water and say there is not a hazard to the people living there.

Jared, his girlfriend and their four pets don’t know when they’ll be allowed back home. He says they’re lucky it wasn’t worse.
