Amerks fans say increased Civic Center Garage security appreciated after attack

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A new security team is patrolling the inside of the Civic Center Garage in Downtown Rochester after a violent attack over the weekend.

A husband was injured by a man with a hockey stick in front of his wife and nine-year-old.

Police say the suspect, a homeless man named Tyrone Oliver, attacked them as they were walking back to their car from the Blue Cross Arena.

Wednesday night was the first Amerks game since the attack and fans told News10NBC they noticed a difference.

"It’s very comforting for me because I usually leave the game early and sometimes it’s scary walking in the garage you know by myself," said Fairport resident Janie Holcomb.

"We have season tickets to the Amerks," said Hilton resident Laurie DiMaria. "I wouldn’t come down alone so now that I know there’s extra security I definitely feel better."

Along with the 24/7 security—the county says there will be enhanced lights, new security video and improvements to the doors and entrances at the garage.
