5 teachers injured in incident at Franklin High School, Rochester Teachers Association confirms

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Five teachers were injured during an incident at Franklin High School Friday afternoon, the Rochester Teachers Association confirms.

Union President Adam Urbanski said one teacher may have a broken wrist and another was taken to urgent care, and he is unsure about the others.

"We believe in restorative practices but we should also believe in logical practices, we’re teaching children the wrong lesson when we tolerate violent dangerous behaviors that result in injury to others," Urbanski said.

Urbanski said the union is still in the process of trying to figure out what happened.

He shared an email that a teacher sent to him Friday that claims that one of the teachers was dissuaded by the principal from filling out assault paperwork because he physically restrained the student after being hit twice and before being slapped.

The email goes on to say, “Our students and teachers cannot handle much more. While our allotment of SSOs has increased to 15, all of those positions are not filled. Our School Chief has been in the building more, but that does not seem to have made any difference. There is absolutely no meaningful teaching and learning happening at Franklin Upper on a consistent basis. Our absenteeism is increasing and teacher morale is at an all time low. Without exaggeration, teachers are trying to function with PTSD and traumatic depressive disorder directly stemming from working in our building. Not to mention the trauma our students are experiencing from the constant violence within our school building.”

This comes after a teacher at Franklin High School claimed she was physically and sexually assaulted by a student at Franklin earlier this month.

Earlier Friday, News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke sat down with Superintendent Lesli Myers-Small to talk about the violence in the district.

News10NBC has reached out to the Rochester City School District for comment on Friday’s incident but has not yet heard back.
