Accused cop killer Vickers was released from a Massachusetts prison two months ago

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC learned that Kelvin J. Vickers, charged with murder in the death of an RPD officer, was released from a Massachusetts maximum security prison on May 24.

He was released from Souza-Baranowski Prison north of Worcester, MA, because he served the maximum three-year sentence for a gun possession crime. He was arrested by police in Fall River, Massachusetts in 2019.

Documents show Vickers was in the Massachusetts high-risk offender program when he was in prison. Because he served the entire sentence, Vickers was not on parole or under any supervision when he was released.

Two months later, Vickers was in Rochester, and on Thursday night, police say he ambushed two Rochester police officers—killing Officer Tony Mazurkiewicz and injuring his partner Sino Seng. RPD says Vickers was seen going into a known vacant house on Laser Street after the shooting and was eventually found hiding in a second-floor crawl space.

Vickers was arraigned Saturday morning and the public defender entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

According to a release from RPD, Vickers has been in serious trouble since he was 12 years old. The release says Vickers’ “criminal history includes juvenile contacts for Assault and Battery on an Officer at the age of 12, burglary-related offenses, strangulation with a deadly weapon, assaults with a deadly weapon and two separate possession of firearms offenses.”
