First 52 Adult-use Cannabis Conditional Cultivator Licenses granted

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Cannabis Control Board (CCB) has approved New York’s first 52 Adult-use Cannabis Conditional Cultivator Licenses.

Local businesses, including Roc Dispensary and Hydroponics in Rochester and Honest Pharm in Newark, Wayne County, are on the list.

The conditional licenses will allow cannabis farms to start growing this season so that a crop will be ready for when legal recreational marijuana sales will begin, which is anticipated to be the end of the year.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Office said more than 150 farms applied for the license after applications opened on March 15. The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) will keep reviewing applications and will work with the CCB to get farms approved as quickly as possible.

During Thursday’s meeting, the CCB also directed the OCM to file updated regulations for home cultivation of medical marijuana.

The revisions include allowing certified patients and designated caregivers who are 21 or older to grow the cannabis, changes to some of the storage and security requirements to reduce costs, and creating a framework for licensed entities to sell seeds and immature plants for home cultivation.

The 45-day public comment period would begin on May 4. Once the final regulations for home cultivation are adopted, those with medical marijuana prescriptions can start growing it at home.
