Grand jury indicts two men accused in corner store rape

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The two men accused of raping a young teenage girl in a corner store have been indicted by a grand jury on at least one count. We do not know what charges the men will be facing.

Shadad Alghaithy, 20, and James Hampton, 28, were scheduled in Rochester City Court Friday for a preliminary hearing, but the judge adjourned the cases as they will now be handled in a higher court.

They were initially charged with rape for the incident on March 19 at the store on 95 Central Park where both men worked. They are accused of locking the girl in the store and raping her.

In her statement to police, the victim said she went into the store to buy hair gel, and Alghaithy asked for her number, but she said "no". She told police he then wrapped his arm behind her neck, pulled her into a back room, and raped her. "I told him to stop but he didn’t listen," she told police.

The complaint says Hampton locked the door to the store while it happened.

Then the victim says she ran home, scared, and told her mother, who immediately called the police.

No lawyer dealing directly with the case would speak to News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean on Friday.

Next, the District Attorney’s Office will release the grand jury charged, and the suspects will be arraigned in County or State Supreme Court.

Then, a trial date will be set, which will likely be about six months out.
