NYSP reminds drivers about Move Over Law as road work ramps up

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — With the end of winter in Rochester comes road construction season, and if you’ve driven around town lately, you’ve probably noticed all the construction.

Crews are back out on the roads and as soon as you see those lights, vests or reflectors, it’s your job to slow down and move over if it’s safe.

The Move Over Law was passed in 2012 to protect law enforcement, emergency workers, tow truck operators and maintenance crews.

"It’s imperative that we educate the motorists of how dangerous it is for these individuals to be on the side of the road," said Trooper Mark O’Donnell. "If we could just have motorists reduce their speeds and if at all possible move lanes away from the workers and just ensure their safety. Make sure they get home to their families when they are done working."

Right now, work is being done on 490 in Bushnell’s Basin.

Crews are also starting major work on 390 in Gates and Greece.
