ROCHESTER, N.Y – The Seneca Park Zoo hosted a Deaf Awareness Day on Saturday. They partnered with the RIT National Technical Institute for the Deaf to bring accessible and interpreted animal experiences to deaf and hard of hearing guests.
The event was held to kick off the international week of the deaf. Rochester is home to the nation’s largest deaf population per capita.
“Yeah, a lot of places don’t actually have access for us. Being able to spread awareness is so important and having those places where it’s not hearing based and where you can go and there is sign language access for us,” said Marissa Woodruff, Assistant Director of Alumni and Relations.
The Strong Museum of Play plans to hold a deaf awareness day in the coming months.
