ROCHESTER, N.Y. — There’s a big resurgence going on right now in film photography. Kodak has seen an increase in consumer demand for cameras and film.
News10NBC talked to company leaders who say they’re pleasantly surprised to see their products back in high demand.
We all know Kodak and their various products, but this new interest in cameras, and film is also creating new job opportunities at this iconic company.
“It’s very gratifying to see, because Kodak continues to invest in film,” said Nagraj Boukinkere, VP of Film Manufacturing.
The tiny canisters of camera film never officially disappeared, but are now hard to keep on store shelves. Boukinkere tells us the demand is headed in the right direction.
“So to see the demands come back, and have this tailwind of this product for Kodak as a company, and for technologies is nice to see,” said Boukinkere.
More consumers are choosing to purchase new cameras like the popular 35-milimeter to take their photos.
“I think because there’s so many cameras available on the market that are fairly inexpensive,” said Scott’s Photo Salesman Mark Widman. He continued, “It’s an easy semi-cheap way to get into it.”
Boukinkere says Kodak has always remained in the film business. They not only produce industrial film products such as circuit board film, but also motion picture film.
Kodak Director of Communication Kurt Jaeckel added, “The brand has always been loved, and trusted around the world, and we continue to see that today. There’s a lot of very positive sentiment for Kodak. A lot of that has to do with our history, but hopefully it also has to do with things we are doing today.”
Kodak has 75 open positions they’re looking to fill right now to help meet consumer demands for their film products. The positions are in its Skilled Trades Division.
“This is to manufacture film, which are the operators, which are the skilled tradesman that keep the machines running. These are complex machines. We need a high level of skilled folks to make, and keep the machines running,” said Boukinkere.
