RFD says firefighter is ‘doing well’ after being treated for smoke inhalation
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Fire Department says a firefighter is “doing well” after he was taken away by ambulance at the scene of a fire.
The firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and released from the hospital. It happened after flames broke out at a two-story apartment building at the corner of Thurston Road and Alberta Street in the 19th Ward on Wednesday night.
Crews arrived to heavy, black smoke after the fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. Everyone living in the apartment got out safely but, according to Rochester Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano, a firefighter issued a mayday call and was taken away by ambulance.
“The firefighter identified he was in a mayday situation, requested assistance. His crew helped him extricate out of the building. AMR transported him to a medical facility,” Napolitano said.
RFD started battling the fire from inside the building but had to eventually fight it from the outside because of its intensity. Crews eventually got the fire enough under control to move inside and put out remaining hotspots.
The Red Cross is helping the people displaced by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
