Motorcyclist dies after crash with school bus on Lake Avenue
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Lake Avenue in Charlotte was shut down for hours Monday night after a deadly motorcycle crash. Police say a 20-year-old man is dead after a crash with a school bus, and a family is mourning him.
Students were on board at the time, but no one was injured.
“A school bus was involved. I didn’t realize the school bus was involved. I did see the motorcyclist which was unfortunate and horrific,” said Zachery Sherman, a neighbor.
At approximately 4:58 p.m., Rochester Police officers responded to the intersection of Lake Avenue. and Burley Road. When officers arrived, they found the 20-year-old man dead at the scene.
Lillyanna Howell was out riding a scooter with her dad and little sister and says the police yellow tape blocked off their path. She believes the impact of a crash like this is mind-blowing for kids.
“They witnessed that sort of tragedy and now they have to go home to their parents. Imagine how the parents feel too, having to explain to their kids,” Howell said. “It’s a very heartfelt moment — very scary — bad tragedy.”
Howell also says she is not surprised to hear of another crash in her neighborhood.
“Lake Ave actually yeah is known for a lot of accidents. Like I’ll hear about them sometimes. I hear them, I sleep with my window open, sometimes I’ll hear the crashes,” said Howell.
Sherman says the traffic has become dangerous in the area. He was almost hit by a car last week while in the crosswalk.
“The woman saw me walking, the crosswalk sign was there, and she just kept going,” Sherman said. “That’s somebody’s child. Like how many more people need to die before something is done.”
As for the kids on the bus, Rochester Police tell News10NBC another bus came to the scene to finish their bus route.
