HILTON, N.Y. — A 2-year-old boy was found dead inside his home in Hilton on Monday morning and his twin brother is hospitalized in guarded condition.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies are calling this a “suspicious death” and say it’s a tragedy for all involved.

News10NBC’s crew at the scene saw the home on Parkwood Lane off East Avenue wrapped in police tape. Multiple sheriff’s deputies’ cars were at the scene for hours.

Deputies say the family called about an unresponsive toddler around 5:40 a.m. The parents were home at the time. When first responders got there, they found the boy, and despite life-saving measures he died at the scene. The other boy was rushed to the hospital. Family members and neighbors were outside of the home in tears as investigators looked into the cause of death.

News10NBC spoke with a neighbor who says the area is typically quiet.

“I was just so shocked,” said Kathy Valenza. “And I just can’t even begin to imagine what these people must be going through. I understand that there’s a child, that a two year old that died, and another one that is in the hospital in critical condition or whatever. And I just I don’t know what to think.”

So far, investigators have ruled out carbon monoxide and say they didn’t find any drugs, legal or illegal, in the home. Deputies say they’re continuing to search for the cause and they’re working to give family and friends a space to grieve.

Deputies say they likely won’t release any details over the next few days, as they want to give investigators time to work and the family time to process. Here are more photos from the scene:
