FAIRPORT, N.Y. – Lollypop Farm is at critical capacity. The farm says nationally, dogs are staying longer than usual inside shelters and it’s happening locally too.
This weekend Lollypop is holding a special event called “Clear the Kennels” dog adoption. This is an effort to help fight that national trend and get furry friends into their forever homes.
There are 131 dogs currently in the care of Lollypop who need a home, which the director of admissions, Erin Sandle, says is way more than usual.
“That’s a really high number for us, we’re not normally at that level.”
Sandle has been with Lollypop for almost 20 years, she says nationally, 7.3% more animals are going into shelters than leaving.
“The way things are going, times are hard for people, and I think that’s one of the reasons we’re seeing more dogs coming in and if times are hard, that’s another reason they may not be able to adopt right now,” Sandle added.
Normally you would need an appointment for adoption, but this weekend the shelter is opening its doors for the “Clear the Kennel event”.
“Our kennel space is at critical capacity, We decided that we needed to do an adoption event to get these animals into homes and make space for animals who are in need in the community.”
The shelter says most of the time people want to adopt puppies and kittens, but it wants to remind people that senior animals need love too, and plus, here are some added bonuses:
“With senior pets you’re getting an animal that’s usually house broken, usually has manners and usually is lower energy, so if you’re looking for a dog to sit out on the couch and watch movies, and senior dogs are lovely, they just want to be loved,” Sandle said.
For the month of November all senior dogs and cats are free. “Clear the Kennel” is running Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
