ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police say an 18-year-old died after he was shot while driving a stolen car around Laser Street and Joseph Avenue on Tuesday morning
Officers responded to the area around 6 a.m. after getting reports of shots fired. They found the Hyundai with the victim inside crashed into a pole. He was rushed to the hospital where he died from his gunshot wound to the torso.
Police said the Hyundai, found with a broken steering wheel column, was stolen from the Portland Avenue area that morning.
“She woke up this morning to an officer knocking on her door, asking about her vehicle and she’s like ‘OMG my car is stolen I have to get to work, how am I going to get to work’,” said RPD Captain Frank Umbrino. “So she didn’t know until we advised her that her car was stolen.”
There are no suspects in custody at this time. Officers are still trying to determine what led up to the shooting and anyone with information is asked to call 911.
Local leaders have raised alarms about an increase in thefts for Kia and Hyundai models because of how-to videos circulating on social media. Leaders also say the automakers failed to add proper anti-theft technology, making the cars easy to hotwire with a USB cable.
