Investigation continues after one found dead, one in critical condition in Hamlin shooting
HAMLIN, N.Y. — There are still a number of unanswered questions after a woman was found shot and killed in a home in Hamlin. Another person is hospitalized in critical condition after she was found injured in the home.
Monroe County sheriff’s deputies responded to a scene on Monroe Orleans County Line Road and found the body of a woman with a gunshot wound on Thursday afternoon.
Deputies are investigating, but no arrests have been made. MCSO’s Major Crimes Unit has been on scene investigating and working to learn more information.
Traffic along Monroe Orleans County Line Road was shut down between Sand and Morten roads until crews for the investigation. The road remained closed Thursday night.
Deputies say there is no threat to the public. Still, neighbors say they are shocked to hear about what happened.
Jeffery Moynihan says he has lived in the area for more than 10 years and never heard of something like this happening in his quiet neighborhood.
“I mean a lot of people are like close-knit here, like everyone knows each other, so I’m sure a lot of people already know what’s happened,” said Moynihan, who lives on Monroe Orleans County Line Road.
“I was just driving home and I saw a bunch of cops just sitting past Sparta, and usually stuff doesn’t happen out here, and I just heard about a few minutes ago,” he said.
According to Deputy Brendan Hurley with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies arrived at the home around 2:23 p.m., they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound. A man was also critically injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
“Outside the house is family, friends, neighbors — as you can imagine this is a difficult scene and a difficult time for them so naturally they’re together trying to support each other,” Hurley said.
Neighbors and family could be seen on the front lawn Thursday afternoon hugging and comforting one another.
Deputies are calling this an isolated incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
“Everything happened inside that house, and it seems to be contained just to that house, and we’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened. There’s a lot of investigation to do, but there’s nothing that leads us to believe that there would be any kind of danger outside of the house,” Hurley said.
It’s a situation deputies are calling tragic for the family and those who call the area home.
“I do have a friend who lives a couple houses down. Just prayers for the family, you know,” Moynihan said. “Stay safe; anything could happen.”
