UPDATE: Rochester police said an illegal handgun was found in the trunk of the car where a 4-year-old was shot.

An investigation at Rochester General Hospital, where the 4-year-old was taken for treatment, led to the discovery of the gun. A relative of the 4-year-old was charged with a misdemeanor for criminal possession of a weapon and he was issued an appearance ticket for Rochester City Court.

RPD hasn’t arrested anyone for the shooting and they’re still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

Here’s a statement from Mayor Malik Evans about the shooting:

This weekend’s shooting of a 4-year-old child once again illustrates that a small percentage of people have such a depraved indifference to human life that they don’t even care if children are caught in the crossfire. We will continue to work to bring these individuals to justice.

My team at the City and I remain committed to our multi-pronged approach to bring violence in Rochester under control. We are laser-focused on prevention, intervention, and suppression, and will continue our work to these ends. I urge anyone who has information on this case to call 911.”

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police are still searching for a suspect after a 4-year-old girl was shot on Selye Terrace. Police say six people were inside a parked car Saturday night when shots went off.

News10NBC went back to the scene to talk to neighbors. Every neighbor we spoke to said they heard the gunshots, but did not want to go on camera because of fear that they’ll become targets.

It was very quiet around the corner of Seley Terrace and Pierpont Street, but we were able to speak to some neighbors who said they heard the gunfire. One woman who lives nearby said the second she heard shots, she grabbed her kids and hurried into their basement.

Other neighbors said they hear gunshots all the time in the area, but were beside themselves when they found out the latest victim was 4 years old.

Just before midnight Saturday, police responded to Selye Terrace for the report of shots fired. When they got there, they found evidence of gunfire, like shattered glass on the ground from a car window, but no victims. Moments later, a personal car arrived at Rochester General Hospital with a 4-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound. She was then taken to Strong Hospital where she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say, the gunman went up to a car and started firing. Inside that car were three adults and three babies, ages 6, 4, and 10-months-old.

While we were there, Rochester Police were back interviewing neighbors.

According to the RPD’s Open Data Portal, four children, 10 years old or younger, have been shot in the City since the start of 2022.

Those victims include two 3-year-olds and a 10-year-old, who all survived their injuries. The fourth victim is the 4-year-old who was shot last night, and she has non-life-threatening injuries.

As for kids under 18, 34 have been shot since January. Five have died from their injuries.
