ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The third annual Malcolm X Festival kicked off on West Avenue, honoring the late civil rights leader who was born on May 19.

The festival, which continues through Sunday, featured local vendors and artists showcasing their work. Organizers say the event aims to promote Rochester’s Black community while spreading the peaceful message of Malcolm X.

“It feels great everybody coming to support one another and also to support Malcolm X and what he means to the community. So, I’m glad that they’re out here and spreading the good energy and vibes,” one attendee told News10NBC.

Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little in 1925, was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement known for his powerful speeches and advocacy for Black empowerment. He was assassinated in 1965 at the age of 39. The Malcolm X Festival celebrates his legacy and impact on the fight for racial equality.

Festivities will continue throughout the weekend, offering a chance for people to come together, support one another, and honor the memory of Malcolm X.
