ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department held a press conference on Tuesday announcing that the Portland Avenue fire which left a 5-year-old boy, Malakai Jarel Stovall, fighting for his life was intentionally set.

When the Rochester Fire Department went to 1290 Portland Avenue on Monday at 2 a.m., the duplex was engulfed in flames. Firefighters found Malakai in bed in his second-floor bedroom, and firefighters got him out through his bedroom window.

Malakai has burns over 70% of his body and is on a ventilator in the hospital fighting for his life.

Malakai lived in the duplex with his parents, who were out of town. His 19-year-old babysitter was spending the night there, but the fire spread so quickly that she could not get to Malakai.

The babysitter was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

The home was destroyed. Seven people in the structure next door were able to get out safely.

Two firefighters were injured: One had injuries from falling, and the other had burns. Both are recovering at home.

Police believe that more than one person started the fire. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.

Police are urging anyone with Ring Camera video or any information to call 911.
