ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The teen parents of a 3-month-old baby boy pleaded not guilty in court Thursday morning after their son was mauled to death by dogs earlier this month.

The boy, Sulamain Hawkins Jr., was found in a home on Bidwell Terrace on August 3. He was rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police say the baby was alone in the house, and his parents occasionally spent nights there.

Police explain Sulamain Jr. was left sleeping on the floor in the attic with two pit bull-type dogs, while the two parents went downstairs to smoke marijuana. The teens found the baby unresponsive when they went back up to the attic.

Child Protective Services, RPD, and the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office have been investigating since the baby’s death.

The teen parents, 19-year-olds Anastasia Weaver and Sulamain Hawkins Sr., are expected back in Rochester City Court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, August 27.
