UR Medicine holds event to raise awareness about early lung cancer detection and treatment
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and the Wilmot Cancer Institute along with UR Medicine are taking steps to highlight the importance of lung cancer screening and treatment.
An event was held at the Strong Memorial Hospital on Thursday to raise awareness about this critical health issue. Lung cancer is more treatable when detected early, which is why organizers are targeting a specific audience.
“We’re looking to reach people ages 50 to 80 that either currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years. Those are our initial starting guidelines, and then we schedule an appointment with one of our providers,” said Kari DePoint, a nurse practitioner.
“When we catch things in stages one and two with lung cancer screening, it is much better and more beneficial for the patient,” DePoint added.
Additionally, URMC offers resources to help patients quit smoking, aiding in the fight against lung cancer. Resources include a smoking cessation treatment center and research programs.
