ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Gateways Music Fall Festival kicks off in Rochester Monday night, showcasing the depth and history of Black classical artistry with a number of performances in collaboration with the Eastman School of Music.

News10NBC spoke to the festival’s president, who says day one is all about the kids.

“Opening day today is a day for youth, young musicians institute. We believe deeply in cultivating and supporting the next generation. And our artists, many of them have really robust teaching practices as well, so this is an expression of how they do classical music,” said Alex Laing.
