ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Holiday travel is in full swing at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport on Wednesday morning, the day before the Fourth of July.

The TSA predicts record travel for the Fourth of July. Nearly two dozen flights are scheduled to leave by noon. Mark Gruba, communications specialist for AAA, spoke about why this Fourth of July could break travel records.

“It’s record travel this year. I think it’s meeting the demand that is out there,” he said. “We’re seeing more people fly this July 4 than any point in the last 25 years. I think the big thing is people are taking advantage of a couple of things. Domestic airfare is actually a little bit lower this year by about 2% than it was last year. And they’re taking advantage of the opportunity to take this holiday on a Thursday and extend it to a longer long weekend or in some cases a full week.”

News10NBC spoke with travelers Wednesday morning at the Rochester airport about why they’re flying and about their advice.

“It’s so much more convenient even though I hate airplanes,” Amy Bagley said.

“Drive safe if you’re driving and be on time because there’s going to be a lot of traffic out here,” Kayla Sciarabba said.

If you’re flying out, remember to get to the airport early and be ready to get through security with your ID and ticket prepared.

Some of the flights out of Rochester are heading to Newark, New Jersey, an airport that’s dealing with a string of delays and cancellations due to low staffing for air traffic control. The FAA says staffing at Newark is currently 59%, well below the national average.

The FAA says it plans to transfer management of the New York-New Jersey airspace to the Philadelphia air traffic control tower in late July to improve efficiency.
