Police arrest teenager in deadly Cuba Place shooting
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police have arrested a teen suspect in connection to the deadly shooting on Cuba Place. The shooting happening on August 30, when police say they found 39-year-old James Jackson Jr. shot inside a car that had crashed into a pole.
Investigators have identified 17-year-old Raphael Marquez as the shooting suspect. On Monday, Marquez was seen near Clinton Avenue and Radio Street. He initially ran away from police, but was eventually arrested.
Marquez was also arrested twice last year with loaded handguns.
He has been charged with second-degree murder. He was arraigned Monday night, and brought to the Monroe County Children’s Center.
On Monday, Governor Kathy Hochul was in Rochester to talk with local leaders about taking the streets back.
“It’s about not just keeping people safe, but they have a God-given right to feel safe, too. And that’s what’s missing right now in this community. And I want that back. I want that back. They should be focused on everyday lives,” Hochul said.
Hochul also said she is giving Rochester more resources, such as 25 state troopers, crime prevention initiatives, and upgraded crime fighting technology.
State Assemblymember Demond Meeks says it’s on the adults to set a good example.
“Who are you bringing up behind you in a positive light, teaching them what it means to be a man, teaching them what it means to be a woman, teaching them what it means to be a caring individual in a loving community?” Meeks said.
Rochester Mayor Malik Evans says even one homicide is too many.
