Greece Central School District releases reopening plan: 5 days of in-person learning included

GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC)— Add the Greece Central School District to the list of local districts to unveil its planned reopening guidelines for the fall.

In a letter to families obtained by News10NBC, Superintendent Kathy Graupman said the district will move forward with the following measures:

• Students should be in school five days a week.
• Students, staff, and visitors should wear masks indoors — regardless of vaccination status.
• Physical distancing of three feet should be maintained indoors whenever possible.
• For added protection, schools should layer additional prevention strategies including hand hygiene, enhanced cleaning protocols, respiratory etiquette, and screening testing.
• Students and staff should stay home when sick.

Graupman said the school board approved the measures Tuesday night.

"We are thrilled that we are able to get our kids back in school five days a week and resume pre-COVID extracurricular activities," Graupman said. "Wearing masks indoors may not be ideal, but it’s our responsibility to create a safe environment for all children. As conditions change, we will revisit masking expectations."

Masks will not be required outdoors or where physical distancing can be possible.

The New York State Department of Health decided it was not going to issue any rules or guidance on re-opening schools. But now, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) plans to issue reopening guidance for schools. Already, Penfield and the Rochester City School District have announced plans, each with mask mandates.

New York Lt. Gov Kathy Hochul Thursday said mask mandates in other districts may be possible.

As for Greece, Graupman said a more detailed reopening plan will be submitted to the board to review on Aug. 24. The district is also awaiting more guidance for athletics.
