NEW YORK, N.Y. (WHEC) — Governor Kathy Hochul signed a new law that would bring sweeping changes to the criminal justice system across New York State.
Hochul signed the "Less is More Act" Friday, which largely eliminates the practice of incarcerating people for technical parole violations in New York.
It will also bolster due process and speed up court hearings.
Hochul says this is an area where New York has lagged behind the rest of the country.
Today, 191 inmates will be released from Rikers Correctional Center, under the provisions of what would be in effect under the "Less is More Act".
In addition, 200 inmates will be transferred from Rikers to other prisons to relieve overcrowding.
