CALEDONIA, N.Y. — The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday that a Caledonia man has been charged with the murder of his 2-month-old son.
DA’s Office said that Zachary McCaa, 26, killed his son by causing blunt force head injuries at his home on Iroquois Road.
The Caledonia Police Department and an emergency medical team responded to a 911 call on June 9 for the child not breathing. They found the baby in grave condition and took him to Strong Hospital. The baby died 7 days later.
An investigation by police, sheriff’s deputies, and Strong Hospital staff led them to question McCaa, who was the child’s only caregiver. Investigators believe that McCaa threw the child and violently shook him.
McCaa was arrested on June 10 and was originally charged with only reckless assault of a child. Since the child’s death, his charges have been upgraded to second-degree murder, first and second-degree manslaughter, and endangering the welfare of a child.
McCaa is currently in Livingston County Jail and scheduled to return to court for further proceedings on November 22.
