ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The new school year in the Gates Chili Central School District kicked off with a bit of history being made Tuesday as students, and teachers were welcomed back for the first day of school.

Students we talked to shared their excitement of being back in school following their summer break, and at the same time the district officially rolled out their newest buses as scheduled.”

“I was very excited to come to come to school,” said Gates Chili High School Senior Kelsey D’Imperio. She continued, “This is my senior year so I’m hoping that it’s a great year. Final year at Gates Chili.”

Summer vacation is over, and school leaders at the high school welcomed their students back on the first day of school. Students woke up to the sounds of their alarm clocks.

“Oh it was really hard to roll out of bed this morning, but I was generally excited,” said Gates Chili High School Senior Kayla Maragh.

D’Imperio added, “Oh I was tired, but I’m so excited to come here and see my friends.”

High school Junior Jonathan Vance said, “Just the sense of normalcy is good for everyone. No more masks. Everything is normal like it used to be.”

Parents are also happy the first day is here.

Patrick Moussignac: “What’s it like getting them out of the house after having them all summer?”

Tracy Barnsbach: “It’s good. She’s already been here at school playing sports. So we’re already in the swing of things, getting back to school.”

But the big news on this opening day is the district’s two brand new electric school buses. Matthew Helmbold, GCCSD Transportation Director says finally they’re on the road.

“It has been a two-year journey to get the buses, to get the chargers, to get the infrastructure going, have the support from the dealers, and the state. It’s just been an exciting process,” said Helmbold.

In fact, Gates Chili is the only school district in the entire state to have these buses, with 3 more coming later this fall.

“It’s always nice to be the first, and definitely something that we’re getting asked a lot of questions by a lot of people,” said Helmbold.
